Spring 2019 The River House presents …

Youth Music Program

scholarships, instruments, musical community, mentorship

The River House nonprofit arts and music program is happy to announce the Music Makers youth music program for 3-10th graders in Hampshire County, WV beginning late Spring 2019. This music scholarship and "immersion" program will partner with teachers from The Cat and The Fiddle music school (opening in Capon Bridge in June) to provide students with free or reduced cost lessons and instruments. The River House will host performance opportunities such as Open Mic, Jams and a new "Chocolate House" open mic night reminiscent of the beloved teen Chocolate House years ago at the middle school. Music teachers and other musical mentors will encourage ways for students to enjoy the benefits of belonging to a musical community.

Under the direction of Jo Murray, River House Executive Director, and a Youth Music coordination team, this program will empower the next generation of musicians in our region. The life-long benefits of learning to play an instrument and belonging to a creative community are enormous.

Bo Gill Scholarships- Sponsored by Rebecca Keiver (Becky Oates), a Capon Bridge native who learned to play an instrument and was part of a music-making community as a child. She believes, learning to practice and play music was a reason for her healthy childhood and successful adulthood. She wants to provide lessons and performance opportunities for Capon Bridge kids as a way give back to the community she loves.

This program is created in honor of her great aunt Beulah “Bo” Gill, former 6th grade teacher at Capon Bridge Elementary School. She taught Rebecca to play piano. We’ll offer “scholarships” to local 3-10 graders who want to learn to play.

Chocolate House “open mic” club- Years ago, “The Chocolate House” filled the CB Middle School auditorium on Friday nights. Planned and performed by youth, this was the positive start for a lifetime of music-making. Teachers, Steve Bailes and Charlie Streisel, are helping us revive this new version of Chocolate House!
