JUNE ARTISAN OF THE MONTH: Julie Farrar

Julie Farrar: Clay is my way of expressing what I see, think, and feel. When I was in high school, I watched a Japanese potter spend an afternoon making tea bowls at an art museum in Massachusetts. His serenity and the magic of  watching balls of clay turn into beautiful forms transported me.

I constantly find the unexpected emerge from clay, whether I am making something on the wheel or hand-building. I have spent my lifetime learning pottery-making skills, but my best work comes when I can let go and see things unfold as I work.

My inspiration is almost always from nature, whether the look is very stylized or organic. In addition to pottery, I do both sculpture and large wall-pieces that can be architectural; these range from a bathtub-surround to art to hang on your wall.

Because of clay: I studied Anthropology; I lived with a pottery-making Cakchekal Indian family in Guatemala, digging clay from the riverbank and firing it in a mound of dried sticks and dung; I exhibited a sculpture installation about the injustice of gold mining destroying the environment of the local people; I taught a workshop to help people with emotional trauma find a way out; and I found a voice for my own trauma and creativity.
