Meet our Artisans’ of the Month
Christa Lemons
Christa Lemons: Years ago, I stumbled upon a book at my local library titled, Weaving, Spinning and Dyeing by Rachel Brown, from that moment on, I was hooked on fiber arts. I already knitted and crocheted; but I found the idea of spinning my own fiber to weave into cloth very intriguing. Fast forward to 1998 and my first Introduction to Textiles class...I knew then and there that I had found what I had been looking for.
Over time, I learned weaving, dyeing, and textile construction, as well as fiber types and where they come from. I purchased my first loom in 2002; now I have many and use them all. Currently, I am learning about tapestry weaving and am very interested in natural dyeing. I love to weave with cotton to make items for the home or for personal use, and wool is my number one for warm blankets, tapestry weaving, and felting.
The items I create--some of which are on display at The River House--span over 20 years and run the gauntlet from rusting and natural dyeing to fine thread color and weave studies. I have included my Weaving A Life Key Forms because they are central to my ideas of weaving as well as life itself.
I am the owner of Soulistic Weaving in Paw Paw, WV, and I attend 2 festivals a years in Berkeley Springs, WV: at the Morgan County Master Gardener Plant Fair in May; and at The Apple Butter Festival in October. I teach as Introduction to Weaving class and am planning future classes at The River House. I am also an active at The River House monthly Artisans’ Markets in Capon Bridge, WV where my work is available for purchase and on display. I also accept commissions and special orders of various kinds.

Barbie Hillenbrand
Barbie Hillenbrand: Watercolor is my primary medium, while Pyography (wood burning) has become my newest way to express the beauty that surrounds us. In January, my work was juried into Tamarack, showcasing the “Best of West Virginia” fine arts. Soon, both mediums will be on display and available at Tamarack.
I began my art career in 2003 when I picked up a brush and discovered that I had been blessed with a wonderful talent. In the years since, I have received formal instruction from several artists.
Today, I use these gifts which I was given to give back to others. It’s a full circle of giving by bringing joy to the new owner of one of my paintings or to a cancer family in need of financial assistance through “Art4Cancer.” I am all the more inspired to create by knowing that my art makes a positive difference in the lives of those around me.
