OCTOBER ARTISAN OF THE MONTH: Eva Taylor
Eva Taylor: Eva Taylor of Ironwood Farms West Virginia works to provide education and general encouragement of regenerative agriculture, sustainable living, independent learning and artistic expression. Her creations include Food forest gardens and native plantings on her properties as well as Adirondack pack baskets and various collection vessels she designs herself. Her professional life as a structural bodyworker keeps her connected to her community providing relief from chronic and acute pain conditions. As a teacher Eva creates workshops and lectures teaching a variety of sustainable living skills including permaculture living, food forest gardening, soil health, fermentation, soap making, and basket weaving. On any day of the week you might find her weaving, fixing people, harvesting herbs, playing old time fiddle tunes, or researching for her next lecture, workshop or adventure. Eva grew up in the woods of Maine and now resides in eastern West Virginia with her husband Dain and daughter Shayna.
“Adirondack pack baskets have a history in land conservation efforts and remind me of my childhood home in Maine. I design all of my baskets from start to finish and can build baskets to suit whatever need. Everyone is hand made without the use of molds or forms, and is a unique piece of utilitarian art! Leather straps and harnesses begin as leather sides and are hand cut and fitted to each basket. My baskets have found their way into the hands of wild food foragers, mushroomers, gardeners, urban farm market supporters, berry pickers, wood carvers, beachcombers, and herbalists. My hope is that by creating vessels people love to use, I can lend a hand in replacing throwaway plastics and further the use of the Adirondack Pack Basket in the conservation of our resources.“
