Hollows, Peepers and Highlanders:

George Constantz, favorite local nature writer and teacher will begin the sunset nature program by setting the Appalachian stage. After reviewing the highlands’ geologic origins, he will touch on the structure of forest and balds, and pose the mystery of an Asian connection. The heart of the talk explores adaptations with a counter-intuitive twist—sex changes of a plant, lying by fireflies, individual recognition by salamanders. After touching on seasonal adaptations, he will conclude with his interpretation of the Appalachians’ four biggest environmental issues.
