Over the course of 2-2.5 hours, participants will learn how to spread their own butterflies and create 5x7" shadowbox scenes using dried plants and flowers, as well as a few other inspiring materials. Although all materials will be supplied, students are welcome to bring their own dried materials, if they have them. Each person will leave with a completed shadowbox to display at home or gift to a friend.

Meet the instructor:

Fran Ritchie is an art conservator who spends her days preserving museum collections and her evenings pinning butterflies and creating artwork with friends. Fran has a particular specialty in conserving natural history specimens and worked in the natural science and anthropology conservation labs at the American Museum of Natural History in NYC for several years. It's through that work that she became introduced to the realm of natural history arts. She has worked on restoring historic taxidermy at museums and sites around the country, and her current "9-5" job is with the National Park Service, allowing her to work on both our natural and cultural heritage.
