FolkLife Workshop: Youth Canjo Making with Jim Morris - 11/01

$10.00

Saturday, November 1st, 12-2pm

$10/ Child

Ages 8 and up. Parental assistance recommended for ages 8-12.

Renowned instrument maker Jim Morris will teach workshop participants how to make and play a canjo, a single-stringed instrument with a soundbox made from a tin can.

In this two-hour workshop, students will delve into the history of string instruments and the science behind their musical sounds. Each individual will then construct their own canjo, a single-string, fretless instrument crafted from repurposed tin and aluminum cans with an attached neck. All necessary supplies and materials are provided, but participants are welcome to bring a favorite can if they wish.

Once the canjos are complete, hang around to learn a few songs.

Meet the Instructor: Jim Morris

Carpenter and old-time musician Jim Morris will lead a vibrant discussion on old-time music and how it has inspired his art of making instruments from “junk”. You can find old-time performers all over the country picking and plucking instruments made by Jim.  Jim is an old-time performer inspired by traditional old-time tunes and the rich and creative history of Appalachian Folk musicians constructing instruments from everyday items.
